Soilmec Unveils New Pile-Driving Kit for SC-90 Crane
Renowned for its innovative foundation drilling equipment, Soilmec is now applying its expertise to develop advanced pile-driving technology. Soilmec is offering a new pile-driving kit fully integrated with the Soilmec SC-90 crane.
Soilmec’s engineered package integrates the SC-90 crane with a custom vertical travel lead (VTL) system. Contractors no longer have to worry about needing engineering certification to attach a lead system to their crane.
The new pile-driving kit consists of a vertical travel lead, hydraulic spotter, and diesel or hydraulic hammer specifically designed to meet each customer’s needs. The lead column is typically 75 ft to 98 ft high, but it can be extended to 131 ft for downhole hammers. Using the 98 ft lead column and an elevated vertical lift, the SC-90 can reach a maximum pile depth of 72 ft.
Soilmec’s Drilling Mate System (DMS) is also fully integrated into the pile-driving kit, allowing rig operators and other jobsite personnel to easily monitor various pile-driving parameters, including batter position, verticality, and delivered energy. This DMS real-time monitoring of the rig position helps improve safety.
The new SC-90 pile-driving package increases productivity by improving the ease and speed of pile-driving operations. For instance, it enables a broad reach so that a group of piles can be driven without moving the crane. Piles can be driven using side batter angles up to 15 degrees, forward or aft batter angles up to 18 degrees, forward reach up to 40 ft, and leads raised up to 15 ft above grade.
The SC-90 system can save on personnel costs, if labor agreements allow a reduced crew size. Only a crane operator and one front-end man are needed for pile driving, instead of the standard 4-man crew used on a traditional pile-driving rig, since the spotter positions the piles instead of crew members.
Soilmec’s pile-driving package also saves on equipment costs. Contractors only need to rent or buy one SC-90 crane that can perform pile driving and many other specialized operations. For instance, the SC-90 crane can be configured for pile-driving when equipped with the new custom vertical travel lead system; vibratory driving when equipped with a hydraulic vibrator; drilled piles when equipped with a hammer grab and casing oscillator; bored piles when equipped with a hydraulic or mechanical rotary; digging when equipped with a clamshell; dredging when equipped with a dragline; lifting; and more.
Soilmec’s new pile-driving kit extends the versatility of the SC-90 crane, allowing contractors to build great projects with increased productivity at a lower cost.

Italian ground engineering manufacturer Soilmec will install Volvo Penta's new 13-litre Stage V solution in its SR-75 piling rig. Following a successful outcome of equipping the rig with Volvo Penta's EU Stage IIIA and Stage IV engines, Soilmec has selected the Swedish company's D13 Stage V solution for future production. The change comes ahead of the new emissions regulations coming into force in 2019.

Approximately twenty years ago, those of us working in the off-road heavy equipment industry regularly witnessed a high amount of failures in machines operating on cement or other hard surfaces. Extended steel rims were used with small, hard, rubber wheels. When these rubber tires chipped and chunked, vibrations and bouncing sent shockwaves into the machine, causing shortened life and expensive repairs, not to mention stress on operators. Little Beaver has introduced the new Lone Star LST1 heavy-duty geotechnical drill rig. The LST1G+HD drills to 100 feet with an optional 4.25-inch hollow stem auger. The new model offers enhanced power and capabilities when compared to Little Beaver’s smaller LST1G+ geotechnical drill. Little Beaver added a planetary reduction gearbox for more torque and a reduction mechanism for increased push/pull-back force over its standard geotechnical drill rig. Atlas Copco’s four-wheel drive FlexiROC T15 R drill rig, first launched in 2008, has been updated with a range of improvements that make it more useful and efficient than ever.
Drilling straight holes in unstable rock formations is an accomplishment and GO Drilling Inc. does it all the time. As a result, the Ottawa drilling and blasting company enjoys a reputation as a “straight-shooter”. “We face lots of different types of rocks in Ontario: soft rocks easy to drill, soft abrasive rocks, and hard granite with lots of seams,” says Mat Oswald, the company’s operations manager. “The seamy rock is especially challenging. It is our biggest challenge in keeping straight holes and accuracy.”
To meet the demand for a heavier and more productive ground improvement equipment BSP International Foundations has unveiled the latest addition to the company’s lineup of Rapid Impact Compactors (RIC). Since it was built in 1984, active landslides have plagued an ill-fated, 2.5 km stretch of highway 744 that rests above the town of Peace River, about 500 km northwest of Edmonton. Helical Pier Systems Ltd. (HPS) has entered into an agreement to purchase pile driving/drilling services company, Landcore Technologies Inc. (Landcore). The transaction, effective June 1, 2015, will make HPS an industry leader in both Helical (screw) piles and pile driving, diversifying the service options available to customers.
The Sonic SideGrip vibratory pile driver is an excavator-mounted attachment with articulating arms and side-gripping jaws that speed and simplify the pile driving process. Three-hundred-and-sixty degree rotation and three-axis movement make it possible to pick up piling, transport it across the jobsite, place it into position and drive it into the soil with one fluid motion. In addition to safety benefits, this eliminates the need for peripheral equipment such as cranes, loaders and telehandlers.
In Montreal, a Liebherr LRB 255 piling and drilling rig owned by Centurion Fondation, Inc. is being used with a double rotary drive DBA 300 for the construction of an entry shaft for tunnel excavation. This application is relatively new in North America and is being executed for the first time in the province of Quebec.
