Epiroc's fifth generation Rig Control System for Pit Viper blasthole rigs takes next step toward fully autonomous mining
Epiroc has introduced the fifth generation of Rig Control System (RCS). Epiroc says that the RCS 5 is the next step toward fully autonomous mining.

Epiroc has appointed Jon Torpy as General Manager and President for Epiroc USA LLC, effective May 1, 2019. Mr. Torpy brings 15 years of broad leadership experience with Epiroc and predecessor Atlas Copco, and 20 years of overall industry experience.

Battery-electric equipment allows a mine to unlock a number of benefits: improved health and safety, reduced greenhouse gas emissions and decreased operating costs. "We are leading the charge towards sustainability in mining through battery electric, zero-emission equipment," says Stevan Topalovic, Vice President Marketing Underground Rock Excavation division at Epiroc. "At Power Change Days, we proudly present our second generation electric battery 14 and 18-tonne loaders, our 42-tonne truck and our mid-sized drilling family including face drilling, production drilling and rock reinforcement rigs."
Epiroc has acquired 34 percent of ASI Mining, which is based in Mendon, Utah, and is a subsidiary of Autonomous Solutions Inc. Its products include on-board hardware and software that convert vehicles to autonomous operation, as well as system level software platforms for command and control of autonomous fleets across various mining applications. The solutions integrate with various mobile mining equipment, regardless of make or model, and are used by mining customers globally. The business is estimated to have revenues in 2018 of more than USD 6 million.
The recently inaugurated Control Tower located in Epiroc facilities in Örebro, Sweden, is designed to be an innovation arena to collaborate around, and to explore and develop automation and information management solutions. The Control Tower is much more than a showroom - it is a part of the Epiroc strategy to support customers to take the right steps towards safety, productivity and improved operations.
