Faster production of curbs and barriers
A Quebec contractor specializing in slipform curb and barrier work has added a Power Curber 5700-SUPER-B to its fleet of six large competitive machines.

After pouring tight radii in a parking lot with 80 islands, Ron Lamontagne, buyer and equipment manager for Ciments Lavallee Ltd. in Laval, was singing the praises of the smaller Power Curber. “It’s fantastic,” he said. “It really is a great machine. It speeds the work. Our big machines are not made for this work. The Power Curber pours a nice, straight line.” Ciments Lavallee employs 110 people. Eighty percent of their work is 16- to 18-inch curbs and 20 percent is Jersey barriers.

Ron explained that they needed this smaller machine because they had three million feet of curb and islands to do in one area. Before buying the SUPER-B, the company tried two competitive, smaller curb machines but that they were slow. “Somebody told us about Power Curbers, and we called a couple of people and they said the Power Curber is fantastic,” Ron said.

The best thing about the SUPER-B is the auger, he added. “We save about eight minutes on a truck. You multiply that out and realize we can do much more work in a day.” The auger holds one cubic yard (0.76 cubic metres) of concrete and discharges up to 2.5 cubic yards (1.9 cubic metres) per minute.

It is fully enclosed and holds enough concrete to get through a tight radius without delays caused by repositioning the ready-mix truck. The auger’s increased mixing power results in a strong, smooth product. Separation of the concrete caused by belt conveyors is eliminated. The auger pivots for easier feeding by the concrete truck. For transport, the auger shifts to the front.

Another plus for Ciments Lavallee is the SUPER-B’s compactness and low centre of gravity. “The foreman can talk to the guys without screaming,” Ron said. “The machine is so compact, if the operator wants to make a change, he can make it right away.” In addition to working well, Ron said that the machine is also easy to maintain and easy to clean.

The Power Curber 5700-SUPER-B features a 50 percent increase in horsepower. The 99kW engine increases the machine’s trimming and pouring capabilities in high-production curb-and-gutter applications.

The hydraulic mold offset allows the operator to hydraulically adjust the mold vertically 40.6 cm vertically and 61 cm horizontally for rehab curb work or pouring around catch basins. The machine stays on line while the mold moves, resulting in no delays.

The Quick-Connect Mold Mount System, an option, allows molds to be changed in only a few minutes time without heavy hand work. This saves as much as 30 minutes of time per mold change.
