Roundup: electric rollers you can buy or rent in 2023
5 manufacturers have jumped into the electric roadbuilding equipment market with the first generation of electric rollers

INTRODUCTION
DYNAPAC
Volvo's first electric machine for roadbuilding
The DD25 asphalt compactor is Volvo's first electric machine for the roadbuilding sector. This compact double-drum machine targets small scale compaction projects like repairs and patching, parking lots, and more
"As a global leader in construction solutions, delivering premium products and services, we not only have a responsibility to reduce our carbon footprint, but we are committed to leading the way and providing real-life solutions for our customers that will help them meet their own sustainability goals. We are proud to expand our portfolio of electric machines and extend our offering to the road segment," says Ray Galant, vice president, product management and productivity with Volvo.
The double-drum asphalt roller is based on the same architecture and components as Volvo's ECR25 Electric compact excavator and L25 Electric compact wheel loader. It delivers zero emissions and is ideal for environments that are strict with their emissions regulations, or for organizations seeking to improve their own sustainability.
Volvo says that the DD25 Electric uses the same charging solutions as the ECR25 Electric and L25 Electric. It comes with an integrated on-board charger that allows charging from 0 to 100 percent in as little as three hours, depending on AC power level. An optional off-board DC fast charger can charge the machine in a little over an hour. Volvo expects the DD25 to operate a full shift on a single charge, depending on the type of job and intensity of the work cycle.
With battery-electric power, the DD25 Electric offers 24 kW of power, 30 percent more than its conventional diesel-powered counterpart, the DD25B. The electric machine is more responsive in terms of speed and vibrations. It performs better on grade, thanks to the size of its components, and is better at high elevations than diesel machines.
Operators can take advantage of 360-degree visibility and high-frequency compaction to ensure they achieve a smooth finished asphalt surface quickly. Frequency can be adjusted from 3,500 vpm / 55 Hz to 4,000 vpm / 67 Hz as required by the application.
Hamm offers 8 electric roller models
According to Hamm, the demand for low-emission or even zero-emission construction machines keeps growing, and the road construction and earthworks sector is no exception to this trend. HAMM is meeting this demand with the introduction of its quiet and emission-free electric rollers.
Hamm's 8 models of battery-powered electric tandem rollers weigh between 2.5 and 2.7 tonnes. The models are: HD 10e VV, HD 10e VO, HD 10e VT, HD 10e OT, HD 12e VV, HD 12e VO, HD 12e VT, and HD 12e OT. They are ideal for use on urban construction sites; in gardening and landscaping; and in other areas where emissions must be avoided and noise must be limited, such as hospitals, underground car parks, etc.
Benefits of utilizing a Hamm electric roller include 100 percent electric drive with no local emissions, reduced noise, and operation capability identical to diesel-powered machines. Hamm says that these rollers deliver maximum compaction power and efficiency with high-battery run times and long operating times delivering enough energy for a typical working day. Hamm says it optimizes use of energy for long operating times, and uses energy recuperation.
The Hammtronic electronic machine management system monitors and controls all key machine functions. Zero-maintenance electronic components include the battery, e-motors, inverter, and DC-DC converter. Hamm electric rollers use 70 percent less hydraulic oil than diesel-powered models.
