The 2022 GMC Sierra will feature a number of new models and features that include added technology integration and updated designs both inside and out. The popular pickup line also comes into 2022 featuring new trim models that include the Denali Ultimate, which GMC says is the most advanced and luxurious pickup in its class.

Scheduled to reach dealerships in the first quarter of 2022, the new Sierra focuses on integrating technology in the interior with a 13.4-inch diagonal touchscreen standard on all trims except Pro that features Google built-in compatibility. The interior design features a cockpit-oriented instrument panel and more functional centre console that includes electronic shift control (ETRS) on those models with front bucket seats. A 12.3-inch diagonal digital instrument cluster is available, along with a 15-inch diagonal multicolour head-up display available on some models.

Design updated inside and out

Outside, the 2022 Sierra includes many new design updates that vary based on trim. New dual-projector LED headlamps and a revision of GMC's daytime running lamps give the Sierra a wider appearance, and new wheel designs are available on some trims.

All models feature a range of professional-grade features that add capability to the truck. The six-function MultiPro tailgate is standard on all trims except Pro, and the CarbonPro carbon fibre composite bed is standard on Denali Ultimate or available for the AT4 and Denali trims, offering higher cargo volume for short-bed trucks.

Luxury and off-road excitement

Two new trims are available on the 2022 Sierra - the Denali Ultimate and AT4. Both feature a range of benefits for owners with luxury the key for one and off-road performance on the other.

The Denali Ultimate features a range of unique external styling cues that make it stand out for premium truck buyers, while on the inside it features leather trim, power-adjustable and massaging front seats, a new premium sound system, standard Rear Camera Mirror with full camera display, and a variety of other luxury additions.

It is powered by GMC's 420-horsepower 6.2-litre V-8 matched with a 10-speed automatic transmission featuring Electronic Precision Shift. Four-wheel-drive, with an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case, is standard.

Off-road enthusiasts will enjoy the first-ever AT4X in the Sierra line, a truck that GMC says will deliver advanced off-road capability when needed while also offering on-road comfort, technology, towing and payload capability.

With a 6.2-litre V-8 engine and 10-speed automatic transmission, the AT4X features off-road chassis and suspension calibrations, unique springs and dampers that improve front and rear suspension travel, a two-speed transfer case with selectable modes for a variety of off-road conditions, front and rear e-locking differentials, 18-inch black wheels with Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac mud-terrain tires, and other features.

The interior is luxury-focused with leather and wood trim and similar outfitting to the Denali Ultimate.

Leather trim and technology features abound in the 2022 Sierra Denali Ultimate interior.

Range of power options

The 2022 Sierra features an enhanced 2.7-litre turbo high-output engine standard on the Pro, SLE and Elevation trim levels. The engine produces estimated torque of 420 lb.-ft., up about 20 percent from the current engine. Max trailering ratings are 9,400 pounds on two-wheel-drive models and 9,100 pounds on four-wheel-drives with the 2.7-litre Turbo.

Other options in the lineup include an improved 3.0-litre Duramax turbo-diesel, which pairs with chassis changes that allow for inclusion of the max tow package. The engine, which generates 277 horsepower and 460 lb.-ft. of torque, now has a max tow rating of 13,200 pounds.

Also available are a 5.3-litre V-8 and 6.2-litre V-8 with Dynamic Fuel Management. All V-8 engines and the Duramax 3.0-litre are paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

SuperCruise adds trailering capability

GMC's hands-free driver assistance technology Super Cruise is available on the Denali Ultimate, and can be used on divided and compatible highways in Canada and the U.S. For 2022, the feature has added trailering compatibility, with new calibrations to take account of added drag and increased braking distance. Lane Change on Demand and new Automatic Lane Change are also available.

Other trailering assistance technologies on the Sierra line include up to 14 available camera views, GCW alerts when maximum weight is exceeded, in-vehicle trailering apps, and others.

GMC's Pro Safety package is standard on all Sierra trims. It includes Forward Collision Alert, Following Distance Indicator, Automatic Emergency Braking, Front Pedestrian Braking, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, and IntelliBeam auto high-beams.
