CDE has launched their latest video case study demonstrating how construction, demolition and excavation waste can be re-used in high value construction applications. Filmed in conjunction with The Sheehan Group, a family-run business, specialising in construction and civil engineering, viewers have the opportunity to watch the full process from the removal of waste materials from a construction site, recycling the waste materials by wet processing and to their reuse in a residential construction project.

The Sheehan Group, who are based in Oxford, recognized the need to optimise the reuse of waste materials and the business opportunities in this area. In 2012 they invested in an advanced construction and demolition waste recycling system from CDE. The facility uses the latest wet processing methods to create a range of certified sand and aggregates, which are being used in concrete products for the construction industry. The company are also able to use the filter cake material to engineer landfill cells and cap landfill sites.

Tara Sheehan, Financial Director, Sheehan Group comments, "We received regular requests for alternative sustainable products, this facility enabled us to fulfil these requests."

The bespoke recycling plant contains a range of equipment which comes together to create an innovative wet processing solution. The plant includes a feed system, AggMax portable logwasher, Infinity screens and Evowash sand washing plant. In addition, the system employs full closed-circuit water recycling with the inclusion of the Aquacycle thickener and Filter Press.

Eunan Kelly, CDE Reco Business Development Manager for Europe comments, "CDE Reco are continuously exploring innovative ways to increase diversion from landfill by exploring higher value opportunities for recovered CD&EW materials. We work in close collaboration with each customer to develop a tailored solution to maximise the volume of material that they can return into the construction market."

Last year The Sheehan Group company celebrated reaching the milestone of diverting over 500,000 tonnes of waste from UK landfill sites using the CDE recycling plant.

Chris Sheehan, Managing Director, The Sheehan Group, commented "The CDE installation has allowed us to take better control of our business and integrate our recycled products into construction projects. For example, we now make concrete blocks and ready-mixed concrete using recycled sand and aggregates which were formerly waste materials."

Recycled aggregates for roads

Municipalities are responsible for the care and maintenance of vast amounts of roads, from lanes to highways. When those roads are repaired or replaced, there's the potential to generate a significant amount of aggregate material - concrete and asphalt removed from the surface that must be dealt with.
Today's roadbuilding contractors are taking this material and recycling it more than ever before. However, research is showing that some municipalities are far better than others when it comes to using this type of aggregate in their roads - and some are far behind.

LEED changes a boost for C&D

Construction and demolition (C&D) materials are hefty. It is why we can so effectively build roads, bridges and buildings out of them. It's also why, by weight, they are the most significant material in the North American waste stream. This creates a challenge for recycling, as it's usually too expensive, in terms of ROI, to ship most recovered C&D end products, including wood, concrete, drywall, asphalt, and asphalt shingles.

Using recycled aggregates for roadbuilding is the way of the future – time for many to catch up

Municipalities are responsible for the care and maintenance of vast amounts of roadway, from alleys to highways. When those roads are repaired or replaced, there's the potential to generate a significant amount of aggregate material - concrete and asphalt removed from the old surface that must be dealt with.

New sidewall protection for OTR tires designed for concrete and aggregates recycling

At concrete and aggregate recycling sites, recycled aggregate is produced by crushing concrete and asphalt to reuse the aggregate in the construction industry as a base for roads or building foundations.  To keep operations running site managers rely on loaders to push large jagged chunks of torn up sidewalk, roadway or building materials - which can contain steel rebar - to the crushing line to reduce its size.
