New cutter soil mix technology

Casagrande SpA and TEC System have developed a series of rigs for highly productive cutter soil mixing (CSM). This combination of cutter head and base carrier offers an easy to erect and reliable soil mixing system to foundation contractors. The new rigs feature soil-mixing drums mounted on a dual-motor frame, which is connected to the base carrier by a special Kelly bar. The drums, or cutters, are available in 2,400 and 2,800 mm diameters, and in a number of widths ranging from 500 to 1,066 mm. The cutting tools mount on a variety of Casagrande base carriers, and deliver soil mixing at depths ranging from 17 to 30 m with a TD Kelly bar, and from 23 to 35 m with an HTGD Kelly bar.

Cutter soil mixing can be used to construct temporary diaphragm walls, cut-off walls and punctual-oblong elements. During use, cement slurry is mixed with excavated ground at the bottom of the tool, so that the quantity of excavated earth is small. Depending on soil formation, drilling rates with these rigs can be as high as 35 m²/hr (377 ft²/hr). Generally, ground is drilled and mixed on the descending motion and injected with a binder in a specified amount on the ascending motion. Combined with a slurry mixer and grouting pump, self-erecting CSM technology can be assembled on a Casagrande base carrier in a half-day. The system features a touch-screen control panel that provides details on down-hole and surface instrumentation; drum rotation speed and direction; front/behind and left/right deviation; grout flow and pressure; and more information.

In Canada, select TEC System components are being provided through Casagrande subsidiary Casagrande USA, Inc.
