Acterra trucks available with fuel-efficient Eaton six-speed transmission
Sterling Truck Corporation recently announced the availability of the Eaton Fuller UltraShift Highway Value (HV) six-speed transmission as an option for all Sterling Acterra trucks. “By partnering with Eaton to include its UltraShift HV in our popular Acterra model, we are providing enhanced fuel efficiency combined with the strength and drive-ability expected from our trucks,” said Richard Shearing, manager of product strategy for Sterling Trucks. In a study conducted by an independent, third party firm, the Ultra-Shift HV results in urban fuel economy that is six- to 19-percent more efficient than the leading conventional automatic transmission – depending on the duty cycle.

The UltraShift HV is a fully automated transmission system for Class 6-7 vehicles, combining the reliability and durability of a manual Fuller 6-speed transmission with automated shifting logic. Suited for landscaping, pickup-and-delivery service, utility and recovery applications, the UltraShift HV is capable of handling torque capabilities up to 660 pounds per foot and loads up to 33,000 pounds gross vehicle weight. To improve on safety and flexibility, the transmission’s Hill Assist feature automatically minimizes rollback and roll-forward on grades ranging from three- to 10-percent while the driver transitions from brake pedal to throttle.

The transmission also offers significant life cycle cost savings, with no scheduled maintenance for 500,000 miles, including filter and lube changes. Further reducing maintenance costs, the UltraShift HV doesn’t require an external transmission cooler, eliminating a component that could potentially break down, and reducing the overall weight of the truck, which impacts fuel economy.

Medium-duty Acterra trucks (class 5-8 operating range) are designed to handle like a pickup, but with the strength of a solid work tool. A steel cab features high strength and durability and these trucks feature a 106-inch BBC length (bumper-to-back-of-cab), 55-degree wheel cut, standard automatic transmission, sharply sloped hood and a large windshield area. The Acterra offers the cost-saving fuel economy of the latest diesel technology from Cummins and Mercedes-Benz, and with a wide range of frame and suspension choices, a variety of fuel tanks, and a crew cab option, these trucks are ideal for any landscaping application.
