​Westport Fuel Systems Commends New Study Outlining Pump-to-Wheels Methane Emissions from the Natural Gas-Fueled Heavy-Duty Transportation Sector

Westport Fuel Systems Inc. has commended the publication of a new study by West Virginia University scientists at the Center for Alternative Fuels, Engines and Emissions ("CAFEE") quantifying methane emissions from heavy-duty natural gas-powered vehicles and refueling stations. CAFEE scientists collaborated on the study with the Environmental Defense Fund ("EDF") and a group of global natural gas industry leaders including the American Gas Association, Chart Industries, Clean Energy, Cummins, Cummins Westport, International Council on Clean Transportation, PepsiCo, Shell, Volvo Group, Waste Management, and Westport Fuel Systems. The study was published online by the journal Environmental Science & Technology and the results greatly expand on the very limited data on methane emissions from natural gas vehicles.

Westport and Fuel Systems Solutions Announce Intention to Merge

Westport Innovations Inc., and Fuel Systems Solutions, Inc., recently announced that the companies have entered into a merger agreement to create a premier alternative fuel vehicle and engine company. The transaction will result in a combined equity value of $351 million based on the closing trading prices for the shares of both companies on August 31, 2015 and combined annual revenues ranging from $380 to $405 million projected for 2015. The combined company will benefit from complementary product solutions, and a fortified global footprint, with efficient operations and a core focus in developing next generation technology. The merger combines 17 brands in the automotive and industrial space and will allow customers and stakeholders to benefit from the consolidation of technologies, and the expansion of product portfolios, OEM relationships, and global distribution networks. The new entity will conduct business in more than 70 countries, represent a combined 100 years of experience and will trade on both the TSX and Nasdaq under the Westport Fuel Systems name, ticker symbol Nasdaq: WPRT and TSX: WPT, with a new business unit called Fuel Systems Automotive and Industrial Group. The companies' respective boards of directors have unanimously approved this transaction.

Westport Provides Ford 5.0L F-150 with Dedicated Propane Package

Westport Innovations Inc., engineering the world's most advanced natural gas engines and vehicles, has announced the company will offer dedicated, liquid propane systems for 2016 Ford 5.0L F-150 trucks. This new liquid propane system will be offered in addition to Westport's compressed natural gas (CNG) package for 2016 Ford F-150 trucks. Both fuel options are part of the Westport WiNG Power System and are expected to be certified to EPA and CARB standards.

Westport Unveils Its Proprietary Enhanced Spark-Ignited Natural Gas System Targeting Medium-Duty Truck Applications

Westport Innovations Inc., engineering the world's most advanced natural gas engines and vehicles,  is unveiling its newest proprietary technology, the first generation of enhanced spark-ignited (ESI) natural gas system. Westport's new revolutionary approach to natural gas combustion technology is designed to provide vehicle and engine original manufacturers (OEMs) with a "downsized" natural gas solution that is cost competitive while providing similar levels of power, torque, and fuel economy to a larger diesel engine. Using 100% dedicated natural gas as fuel, Westport's new technology optimizes the combustion and thermal efficiencies of the engine by taking advantages of the positive properties of natural gas.

Westport Reports Third Quarter Fiscal 2013 Financial Results

Westport Innovations Inc. the global leader in natural gas engines, has reported financial results for the third quarter ending September 30, 2013 and provided an update on operations. All figures are in U.S. dollars unless otherwise stated. Highlights include:

  • Westport revenue, excluding joint ventures' revenues, for the quarter ended September 30, 2013 was $46.5 million compared with $30.7 million for the same period last year, an increase of 51%.
  • Westport revenue, excluding joint ventures' revenues, for the nine months ended September 30, 2013 was $111.4 million compared with $115.7 million for the same period last year.
  • Segment revenue for the quarter ended September 30, 2013 was: $20.3 million for Applied Technologies; $17.8 million for On-Road Systems; $8.4 million for Corporate and Technology Investments; $77.5 million for Cummins Westport Inc. (CWI); and $114.6 million for Weichai Westport Inc. (WWI).
  • Westport revenue plus CWI revenue for the quarter ended and nine months ended September 30, 2013 was $124.0 million and $311.6 million, respectively, compared with $76.2 million and $270.8 million, respectively, for the same period last year.
  • In the third quarter of 2013, CWI shipped 2,409 units and WWI shipped 9,080 units.
  • For the quarter ended September 30, 2013 Westport reported a net loss of $30.2 million, or $0.53 loss per share, compared with $32.5 million, or $0.59 loss per share, for the same period last year.
  • Subsequent to the quarter ended September 30, 2013, Westport increased cash balance by $148.2 million through a financing transaction, which closed on October 1, 2013.

Westport adds Ford F-150 to its natural gas product offerings

Vancouver, B.C. based Westport Innovations Inc., the engineering firm behind the world’s most advanced natural gas engines and systems, announced at the beginning of August that it will offer the newly launched natural gas powered Ford F-150 featuring the Westport WiNG Power System in both the United States and Canada.

Kenworth plans Liquefied Natural Gas vehicles

Kenworth Truck Company will expand its presence in the growing market for environmentally friendly, liquefied natural gas (LNG) vehicles by beginning production of Kenworth T800 LNG trucks at its manufacturing facility in Renton, Wash., in 2009. Under an exclusive agreement with Westport Innovations Inc. in Vancouver, B.C., Kenworth will use Westport's LNG fuel system technology adapted for the Cummins ISX 15-liter engine. "The Kenworth T800, equipped with a Cummins ISX and Westport's HPDI fuel system, offers a solution with world-class low emissions and greenhouse gases, while delivering outstanding horsepower, torque, and efficiency comparable to a diesel engine," said Bob Christensen, Kenworth general manager and PACCAR vice president. "This agreement with Kenworth creates a dramatic increase in LNG truck delivery capacity and further strengthens Westport's ability to efficiently meet the significant growth in market demand for environmentally clean LNG trucks from the ports and other fleet customers," said Michael Gallagher, president and chief operating officer of Westport Innovations.
