Laser lets drivers guide wing plow more safely
Snow plowing can be a tough job for plow truck operators; that big blade mounted on the front of the truck makes for less visibility in already difficult conditions. Add a wing plow off the side of the truck to the mixture, and operators have a real problem to keep an eye on – especially when plowing roads that might have obstacles like cars and trucks set alongside.

The GL3000C Guidance Laser, by LaserLine Manufacturing, gives the operator a chance to see where his path will take the trailing edge of that wing plow, and let him or her avoid any potential obstacles in the way.

The GL3000C mounts on the top of the truck cab, within a waterproof, hermetically sealed and dry nitrogen charged housing that contains the electronics generating an ultra-bright green laser beam shooting forward off the truck into the snow ahead. Compliant with all U.S. OSHA standards for operation, the green laser (considered the most visible colour to the eye in all working conditions) strikes the road or snow surface ahead of the truck to give the driver a good idea of where the trailing edge of the plow will end up. The reference spot is in the driver’s normal field of view.

To operate in cold temperatures (from –40 to 10 degrees Celsius), the system includes a heat source for the laser exit window to reduce ice build-up on the output lens, and a unique pneumatic snow removal system sends a blast of air at the front of the lens every 15 seconds to remove snow buildup.

A control panel is placed inside the cab so the driver can turn the system off and on when required, as well as control the automatic air blast system if more air is required for other operations. The system works directly off the 12-volt supply from the truck.
