BOMAG upgrades soil compactors with key design enhancements, powerful new engine
A redesigned cabin with ergonomic controls and more legroom pairs with a redesigned exterior to simplify daily maintenance
New BOMAG BC 473-5 and BC 573-5 series compactors are now powered by the Cummins L9 series engine, joining the rest of BOMAG's BC series compactor models. The engine updates include the BC 473 RB-5 and BC 573 RB-5 landfill, BC 473 RS-5 shovel, and BC 473 EB-5 soil compactor models.
The new 300 hp (223.7 kW) Cummins L9 engine offers more power than the model it replaces, improving machine performance. Additionally, the new engine runs at a lower RPM to increase fuel efficiency and longevity. BOMAG's full landfill compactor line, offering operating weights from 57,000 to more than 124,000 pounds (26,000 to 56,600 kg), is now powered by Cummins engines, offering familiarity for service technicians, improving maintenance ease and increasing convenience through locally sourced replacement parts.
"Our customers asked, and we listened. As part of our extensive voice of customer program, the Cummins engine was preferred for service and support convenience," says Matt McDaniel, landfill sales manager, East for BOMAG Americas. "Our design updates help take some of the most efficient and productive compactor models available to the market and make them easier and more efficient to operate."
The BC Series soil compactors also received significant design enhancements
Improving operator efficiency, the BC 473-5 and BC 573-5 models have a new, easy-to-read, 7-inch (177.8-mm) touchscreen display that offers more critical operating parameters, simple screen navigation, and easy fault code diagnostics. A separate standard 7-inch (177.8-mm) monitor displays a high-resolution feed of the rearview camera. An optional 10-inch (254-mm) camera display is also available.
Improved operator joystick controls are ergonomically designed to make machine operation more comfortable and precise. The left joystick integrates the horn and controls direction and forward/reverse/neutral travel functions. The right joystick controls blade up/down operation and optional left/right blade tilt control, if so equipped. A new blade raise/lower cylinder position sensor system gives the operator blade elevation details on the new touchscreen display.
Featuring a redesigned compartment offering more legroom, the new electronic foot pedal replaces the mechanical design of previous models. More efficient, the new foot pedal gives instantaneous throttle response without the delay encountered in previous designs.
The new compactor design makes daily engine checks easier with its electrically powered engine hood that enables opening and closing without starting the machine. Standard electric side mirrors allow the operator to adjust rearview mirror positioning without leaving the seat. Advancing safe operation, a safety beacon light is now standard equipment, and standard LED work lights offer better illumination of the work area than previous light packages. For operating in colder climate conditions, the new BC 473-5 and BC 573-5 series compactors can be equipped with a winter package option that includes a hydraulic heating system.
"While other manufacturers have discontinued their small-frame compactors," adds McDaniel, "BOMAG is introducing multiple upgrades to our 60,000-pound machines. This enables customers who need 60,000-pound compactors to have all the features and benefits of models twice their price."
