Manitou has incorporated several new safety features into its redesigned MTA 842 telehandler, which was shown at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2026. These safety features make it easier for seasoned operators to work safely and also benefit renters who may not be as familiar with this machine.

Safer telehandler entry and exit

The telehandler now includes the Manitou-exclusive Easy Step system — a curved floor sill integrated into the machine. It provides the operator with optimal visibility to the step when entering and exiting the cab. In addition to improved visibility, it also allows the operator to climb into the cab without bruising their shin on the cab floor.

Increased forward visibility

Manitou has further enhanced visibility with an exclusive, innovative new cab design called Super View, which increases forward visibility by approximately 30 percent. This increased visibility has been achieved by replacing the large, thick bar supporting the cab with narrower angled steel bars.

Automatic parking brake

The MTA 842 telehandler also includes a new and exclusive automatic parking brake feature that secures the machine when it is still running. While travelling at slow speeds, the operator simply places the machine in neutral and within two seconds, the parking brake engages automatically. This allows the operator to safely step out of the cab when necessary. After returning to the cab, the operator shifts the machine into gear and presses the accelerator to automatically release the parking brake.

A strong suite of legacy safety features

These new features join existing and optional safety features on the MTA 842 telehandler.

These include a Manitou-exclusive software system that comes standard and provides 57 different pop-up messages to inform the operator of the proper use of the machine. Also standard and exclusive on the MTA 842 telehandler are axle sensors that prevent steering mode changes unless the machine's axles are centred. This is especially critical when loading or unloading the machine onto a trailer, as it eliminates the risk of the telehandler tipping.

Manitou offers optional rear radar and video as additional safety features on the MTA 842 telehandler. They provide a visual and an audio warning of any obstacle behind the machine when the operator is reversing. The audio sounds within the cab and is in addition to the standard backup alarm that alerts workers in the surrounding area that the machine is moving.

Training and certification are essential for safe telehandler operation

These features are only part of a telehandler's safe operation. According to OSHA requirements under Standard 29 CFR 1910.178, all operators must obtain a telehandler certification prior to operating any telehandler. When renting equipment, the rental company can assist in obtaining this certification, which consists of a written exam and hands-on training that covers proper operating procedures.
