Expert dozer operators spend years fine-tuning their skills to master precision grading. To help operators with less experience develop confidence in the cab, OEMs are producing machines designed for smoother control with fewer inputs. These dozers are packed with technology features that elevate the capability of the operator, whatever their skill level, allowing them to execute high-quality work, faster. Here's a look at recent dozer and machine control introductions that are designed to give every operator an edge on the job site.

Caterpillar's new D8 dozer is packed with assistance features

Caterpillar's new D8 dozer is designed to make it easier for operators to transition between machines of different sizes, and it offers a suite of technology that assists the operator with a range of functions. The 10-inch touchscreen in the cab has built-in key features assistance that will give operators an overview of the machine and its technologies and provide helpful tips. The new Cat D8 is also remote-control ready for Cat Command, via either a Command console for line-of-sight operation or a Command station for non-line-of-sight operation.

Cat Assist with Attachment Ready Option (ARO) standard features

  • Stable Blade to work seamlessly with operator inputs to help produce a smoother surface when operating manually.
  • Traction Control, which automatically reduces track slip to save time, fuel, and track wear.
  • Steer Assist, which reduces steering inputs by automating track and blade tilt steering.
  • Blade Load Monitor leverages GPS and provides real-time feedback on current load versus optimal blade load, based on ground conditions, and actively monitors machine load and track slip.
  • AutoRip automates ripper raise/lower and shank in/out positioning to maximize ripping productivity.
  • Attachment Ready Option (ARO) provides wiring and mounting for faster installation of dealer-installed options like Cat Grade with 3D, AccuGrade, Universal Total Station (UTS), or other grade control systems.
  • AutoCarry uses a GPS signal to automate blade lift, helping to maintain consistent blade load and reduce track slip.
  • Cat Grade with Slope Assist automatically maintains pre-established blade position without a GNSS/GPS signal.
  • Slope Indicate is included in the main machine display and shows side slope and uphill/downhill grades.

Liebherr's Generation 8 dozers are designed to provide smooth control and keep operators comfortable

Liebherr has designed its Generation 8 dozers for easier operator control. The Generation 8 lineup includes the PR 716 G8, PR 736 G8, PR 746 G8, and flagship PR 776 G8.

On all of the G8 dozers, hydrostatic travel drive provides smooth operation under fluctuating load conditions. The engine runs at an optimal RPM while adjusting the ground speed automatically with independent drives for each track, keeping operators confident that they will have excellent stability and reduced track slip even on slopes.

These machines all feature integrated operator assistance systems that automatically adjust blade positioning, and all G8 dozers are GNSS-ready from the factory.

Liebherr's Free Modelling gives operators the power to create and edit 3D models directly from their dozer cab. Liebherr

Liebherr Free Modelling allows operators to revise 3D models from the cab

Liebherr's new Free Modelling operator assistance system gives operators the power to create and edit 3D models directly from their dozer cab in real time, allowing them to respond to changing job site conditions. This cost-efficient solution saves on labour and re-work costs while maximizing resource allocation in applications that do not require pinpoint precision, such as right-of-way road construction.

Free Modelling reduces the need for dedicated site surveyors and allows the operator to adapt the site plan immediately if an unexpected obstacle is encountered. Liebherr says that this flexibility is particularly valuable on job sites where conditions can change due to weather, traffic, or other unforeseen factors. Access to real-time data allows the operator to stay up to date with the current job site and eliminates the risk of following outdated plans.

Unicontrol offers an accessible grade control option for customers seeking a streamlined system. Unicontrol3D

Unicontrol automatic grade control is now available for Liebherr dozers

Sweden-based Unicontrol offers automatic grade control for dozers and recently announced compatibility of its automated grading precision tools with Liebherr machines.

Unicontrol calls its systems an accessible option for customers seeking a streamlined machine control system and aims to reduce barriers to adoption. Those barriers include system complexity and high costs.

Unicontrol's automatic grading control for dozers provides centimetre-level accuracy when grading. It allows the operator to set the desired slope or grade reference, and the dozer blade will hold it. By automatically adjusting the blade height and tilt, Unicontrol Automatic Grading Control enables operators to easily achieve and maintain a smooth surface, slope, or grade.

John Deere’s P-Tier dozers are designed to excel with the latest SmartGrade features. John Deere Construction & Forestry

John Deere's latest P-Tier dozers feature SmartGrade updates

Updated 700, 750, and 850 P-Tier dozers were introduced in 2025 and are all compatible with the latest SmartGrade features. John Deere has also introduced larger touchscreens on the dozers, which simplifies navigation and setup.

John Deere grading technologies for P-Tier dozers

  • EZ Grade, which simplifies operation and makes it easier to grade smooth finish passes by automating blade movements and correcting for changes in the machine's pitch. EZ Grade is included with EH controls.
  • Slope Control, included in SmartGrade Ready, is an entry-level grade control system that assists operators in grading. Slope Control allows the operator to view and set blade slope and the system automatically controls the blade to maintain that desired slope.
  • SmartGrade Ready Including 2D Grade Control includes the necessary harnesses needed to upgrade to full SmartGrade. The machines are pre-wired for SmartGrade with Topcon and Leica for seamless upgradability to full 3D with a field kit.
  • SmartGrade is John Deere's fully integrated 3D GNSS grade control system. SmartGrade integrates harnesses and components into the machine and does not require external masts or harnesses. SmartGrade on P-Tier dozers is compatible with Topcon and Leica.

Alongside the P-Tier dozers, John Deere introduced the 850 X-Tier dozer. In addition to SmartGrade, this advanced machine features a diesel-electric E-Drive that optimizes torque delivery. The tracks are controlled independently, giving operators maximum control and confidence when side cutting into slopes, carrying materials around corners, and doing full power turns.
