Long boom, new counterweight, and bigger tires optimize Volvo wheel loader for rehandling

A new version of the Volvo L180H wheel loader is designed to provide operators with the ability to quickly and efficiently load trucks in rehandling uses.

The L180 3-Pass Rehandler features larger, 875/65 R29 tires and a long boom, along with a rehandling counterweight, allowing it to pair up with trucks for quicker loading. A higher tipping load, better fuel efficiency, and longer reach allow the loader to fill a truck in three passes.

"We've had this concept in mind for several years, driven from conversations with our quarry and aggregate customers. The new L180 3-Pass Rehandler will take operators to the next level of loading efficiency," said Eric Yeomans, Product Manager - Wheel Loaders at Volvo CE.

Larger tires give the machine lateral traction and flotation, durability, and resistance to cuts and impacts, plus a stable, comfortable ride and good fuel economy, according to Volvo. The longer boom means an additional 675 lb.-ft. in breakout force as well as two feet more dump clearance. It also lets the operator stay farther from the truck while placing material in the centre of the box.

Wheel spin is decreased and the tires better protected because the operator can stay back from the pile, where the ground is less stable and rocks may cause tire damage.

The L180 3-Pass Rehandler has a variety of buckets available to match with materials and applications. Volvo CE

The rehandling counterweight allows for a bucket that is approximately 0.25 cubic yards (0.19 cubic metres) larger than that on a standard L180H. Customers can choose between four different buckets to find the right fit based on material density: 6.3, 6.8, 7.2, and 7.6 cubic yards (4.8, 5.2, 5.5, and 5.8 cubic metres). The variety of buckets allows users to find the right bucket for three-pass loading, maximizing productivity and fuel efficiency.

Cycle times are improved by the higher reach, as the operator doesn't have to roll the bucket back when moving away, especially on the last bucket. This saves time and fuel. A slightly smaller class of machine scan save owners on purchase and transport costs, and the optimizations can help operators improve their skills.

Services such as Load Assist with On-Board Weighing, Connected Map, and ActiveCare Direct advanced telematics are available.
