(VIDEO) Watch 1960s Scottish crews battle challenges to build a busy motorway

Peat bogs, muddy soil, floods, unmarked mining operations - when the United Kingdom government decided to build a new motorway through central Scotland in the 1960s, they didn't know what they were getting into. The M74 construction, which took several years and wrapped up in 1966, ran into plenty of challenges, but pushed through. This film provides a great, detailed look at the earthmoving, piling, bridge construction, and roadbuilding efforts that made the M74 project a success. Today, after multiple expansions, the M74 is one of three cross-border routes joining Scotland to England.
