Watch: Dig deep into developing mining equipment with this 1960s copper mining film

The 1960s marked some big changes in the mining industry, and this vintage film demonstrates how. "Open Pit Mining Of Copper in the American Southwest" was produced by the Marion Power Shovel Company, and provides a broad overview of copper extraction work. Notably, this video shows some of the early large mining shovels and trucks being debuted at the time, including brand-new 150-ton trucks and matching shovels.

The Marion Power Shovel Company was founded in 1884 as the Marion Steam Shovel Company, and operated as its own entity until 1977 when Dresser Industries acquired the company. The Marion division of Dresser was later spun off and wound up being sold to Bucyrus in 1997. Bucyrus itself was acquired by Caterpillar in 2011.
