Enhanced trailering, new multi-use tailgate highlights of 2021 Silverado 1500
Chevrolet's flagship pickup will hit the streets for 2021 with a new focus on trailering capacity, improved technology and a tailgate with far more functionality than just opening and closing.
The new Silverado 1500 is coming to dealerships bearing new bed functionality, Chevrolet says, with the available Multi-Flex Tailgate bringing numerous features for users who need their trucks to work for them. The unique gate has six functions, offering easier access to bed cargo, enhanced loading and a standing workstation. Activated by a key fob or tailgate-mounted buttons, different configurations can be engaged with the full gate or the second tier for loading and storage. The tailgate has a weight capacity of 375 pounds.
The Silverado 1500 can be equipped with the Silverado Durabed, which brings with it impressive cargo space, LED lighting, a 120-volt outlet and 12 fixed tie-downs, making the 2021 model the most functional and capable Silverado ever, Chevrolet says.
Trailering is improved significantly over the 2020 model year, adding to Chevrolet's history of providing power and technology for trailering needs. When equipped with the 2.7-litre turbo engine, the popular crew cab short box model improves its rating by 2,500 pounds, to a maximum capacity of 9,300 pounds in two-wheel-drive. A new regular cab long box also offers that towing rating and improves the maximum payload to 2,280 pounds.
When customers select the 3.0-litre Duramax turbo diesel, trailering capacity goes up to 9,500 pounds on two-wheel-drive models, while also benefiting from solid fuel consumption, estimated at 7.2 litres/100 km highway.
According to Chevrolet, 96 percent of light duty pickup owners tow less than 10,000 pounds.
Improved trailering technology
The newest generation Silverado offered up to 15 camera views to help improve trailering. Select 2021 models will improve on that, adding a variety of features. A Trailer Length Indicator will, when a lane-change is made with the turn signal activated, a red overlay twice the length of the compatible trailer is shown on the centre console screen to ensure that other vehicles are in a danger zone. A jack-knife alert tracks the location of the trailer in relation to the vehicle, and provides an alert if a potential jack-knife is detected.
Cargo bed view is enhanced for 2021, with zoom view and bed hitch guidance available, helping to align and hook up gooseneck or fifth-wheel trailers. The rear trailer view now includes assisting guidelines when backing up, and a trailer angle indicator shows the relationship between the truck and trailer.
Rear side view is enhanced, as well, providing a split view that automatically biases based on the trailer's angle, showing the left and right sides of the truck and trailer. This was previously only available when driving forward, and is available in reverse for better visibility when positioning a trailer.
Customer-friendly content across the board
With a range of model and trim levels, the 2021 Silverado is aimed at providing good content at all price points. Offerings include the Custom and Custom Trail Boss, Work Truck, LT Trail Boss, LT and RST, LTZ and High Country. Notably, Adaptive Ride Control is available on High Country models, and the True North Plus edition adds convenience and safety content on already popular models.
The 2021 Silverado is expected to arrive at dealerships throughout fall of 2020.
