In the northeast corner of Caterpillar's "AC" facility in a secured location, there is a dedicated work area unlike any other at the company. The ceilings and windows are high, sunlight fills the open space, smoky glass walls surround conference rooms, and large tables promote a collaborative environment. There are unique product sketches hanging on the walls and laying on desks and tables. Cat models – old and new – are on display; as are trophies, plaques and other awards recognizing the inspiring work that is completed here.

At the centre of it all is a multi-generational team hard at work visualizing the next generation of Cat products. Some create on paper, some on computer screen, others in virtual reality. Regardless of the method, their results will most likely come to life on a future jobsite.

It is the Caterpillar Industrial Design Center where, as manager Gary Bryant says, his team works to blend art and engineering to create a human-centred Cat experience.

"It's not only the aesthetic form or the look of our machines," he continues, "but the functional design and how human beings use our machines more effectively. We're giving form to the technology and form to the function of a product."

In the early days of industrial design, machines were concepted using pencil and paper, then formed as clay models, and finally manufactured as prototypes for further testing and validation. This drawing from 1977 is an example of a concept that never reached production.

Throughout Caterpillar history, Cat machines have been manufactured to work productively and efficiently, but it wasn't until the early 20th century that the look of the machine gained importance.

"Around 1930, Cat began to move beyond agriculture and into earthmoving, said Caterpillar Archivist Lee Fosburgh. "Our products were working on construction sites and road sides, so safety and visibility were a real concern. That is when "highway yellow" was introduced."

Around 1958 a small team was assembled to bring industrial design in-house at Caterpillar, and that's when the form of Cat machines started taking shape.

Fosburgh continues, "We were much more utilitarian until the 1960s when we introduced the 225 Hydraulic Excavator. It was then that we began adopting the Cat look and feel across the complete product line."

Today’s designers use tools that allow them to sketch in 3D – eliminating the step of taking a 2D drawing and converting to a 3D design.

Bryant, who is celebrating his 29th anniversary with the company, reflects on how the Industrial Design department has grown and evolved.

"We've moved from being that group who draw pretty pictures to being fully integrated into the design process." He adds, "How the sketch is created has changed dramatically as well. We've gone from pencil and paper to bit pad and stylus on a computer to sketching in 3D."

To him industrial design is all about infusing the Cat DNA in our products and power systems.

"When a customer looks at a machine, we want it to be immediately recognized as Caterpillar. When a customer gets in and uses our products, we want them to immediately recognize the quality and experience that is expected from Caterpillar."

GOMACO adds new distributors in Nebraska and Georgia

GOMACO Corporation has appointed Jinco, LLC, as the authorized GOMACO distributor for the state of Nebraska. They will provide sales and service for GOMACO's full line of concrete construction products. The appointment was made by Kent Godbersen, vice president of Worldwide Sales and Marketing, GOMACO Corporation. Bryan Beck is GOMACO's district manager for Nebraska.

Sourcewell awards Caterpillar the highest score in new heavy equipment contract

Sourcewell (formerly known as NJPA), one of North America's largest governmental cooperative contract holders, recently awarded a competitively solicited contract to Caterpillar. As part of the process, responses from equipment companies were evaluated against multiple criteria to help governmental agencies determine the best value when making purchase decisions. Caterpillar's response – which included considerations such as pricing, customer service, warranties and others – was scored the highest among 14 equipment manufacturers who submitted responses.

Hyundai earns Sourcewell Compact Equipment contract for U.S. and Canada

Hyundai Construction Equipment Americas has just been awarded a contract for procurement of medium-duty and compact construction equipment and accessories by Sourcewell, a national cooperative representing more than 50,000 U.S. and Canadian government, education and nonprofit organizations. This award comes on the heels of Hyundai receiving the contract for heavy construction equipment.

Husqvarna seeking students to spend summer chilling with Automower in Ontario park

Inventys partners with Total and Lafarge to bring carbon capture program to British Columbia

Inventys has  announced a project partnership to develop and demonstrate the first full-cycle solution to capture and reuse CO₂ from a cement plant while also reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Project CO₂MENT will demonstrate and evaluate Inventys' CO₂ Capture System and a selection of CO₂ utilization technologies at Lafarge's Richmond, BC, cement plant over the next four years. This project is led by Inventys in partnership with Lafarge Canada Inc., a member of the global building materials group, LafargeHolcim, and Total, a major energy company. It also received financial support from CCP (CO₂ Capture Project), the Province of B.C., and Canada's federal government through the National Research Council of Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC IRAP).

Lafarge's Richmond facility aims to be most carbon efficient cement plant in Canada

Lafarge Canada Inc.'s Richmond Cement Plant has launched a new and improved lower carbon fuel (LCF) system to reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with the production of cement. Vale Canada and Terrapure win Environmental Award for mine rehabilitation project using biosolids

Terrapure Environmental and Vale Canada received an Environmental Leader Award for Project of the Year for their new, sustainable option for managing biosolids during winter months, when farmland application is prohibited and storage is complicated. Instead of incinerating or landfilling nutrient-rich organics, Terrapure worked with Vale to develop a program to apply treated biosolids to its Central Tailings Area for reclamation and revegetation. It was the first project of its kind in Ontario.

Topcon accepts John Deere Supplier Innovation Award

Topcon Positioning Systems has been selected as a recipient of the John Deere Innovation award for 2018. The Innovation awards are part of Deere & Company's Achieving Excellence program. The Livermore-based company received the honour for demonstrating innovation in development of the SmartGrade mastless grade control system for John Deere motor graders. Sam Negasc, Topcon director of quality assurance, along with Rhondy Rahardja, Nick Petrosov, and Irfan Usman from Topcon accepted the recognition during formal ceremonies held on April 16, 2019, in Bettendorf, Iowa.
