Liebherr extends product portfolio with rough-terrain cranes

Liebherr has extended its mobile crane product range with an additional series of rough-terrain cranes in the 90-tonne (100 USt) and 100-tonne (110 USt) classes. The Liebherr Rough-Terrain cranes LRT 1090-2.1 and LRT 1100-2.1 will be unveiled to the public at the Conexpo in Las Vegas in March 2017.

The manufacturer offered rough terrain cranes in the 1980s to the mid-90s. The development of the new generation was preceded by extensive market surveys and analysis into the requirements for modern Rough Terrain cranes, particularly for the North American Market. In addition to the capacity of the cranes, their safety, particularly their safety resulting from ease of operation, was one of the main focal points for the development of the new cranes.

The two newly designed LRT cranes are based on the same basic technical concept. The crane chassis and turntable are almost identical. The differences relate to the boom length, telescoping technology, ballast weight and lifting capacity.

High safety levels in every respect were the main priority for the design of the new Liebherr LRT cranes. Both new crane models feature an outrigger monitoring system as standard. The support status, on tyres or outriggers, is detected automatically and saved to the crane controller. The attachment of the ballast to the turntable and the installation of the optional double folding jib including its angle adjustment are also recorded and monitored.

The VarioBase® variable support base developed by Liebherr as standard on the new LRT cranes makes an important contribution to enhancing safety. VarioBase® allows each individual outrigger beam to be extended to arbitrary lengths. The crane work is controlled by the load moment limiter within the LICCON controller which calculates the maximum load capacities precisely for the current situation. This prevents accidents by human error during the assembly process and when hoisting loads. VarioBase® also provides greater flexibility on site. As a result of the increased lifting capacities when hoisting over the supports, the crane can hoist loads normally reserved for the next higher crane class.

Safety is also enhanced by providing greater comfort for the crane operator. For example, the crane cabin is 220 mm (8.5") wider than other standard cabins on the market. It can be tilted backwards to provide greater comfort when hoisting loads to great heights. Clear, self-explanatory controls make the crane easy to handle. They allow the crane operator to concentrate on the main focus of his job, working with the crane and the load. A cooler and USB charging socket are standard features in the cabin.

There are ladders, a large number of handles and an electrically extending platform on the cabin to ensure safe access to the crane. The new LRT cranes feature a wide range of storage boxes for accessories, rigging equipment and support timber as standard. They also have a storage facility for the crane hook.

The two newly developed LRT crane models will be launched by Liebherr as the first mobile cranes which meet global safety standards and comply with all global regulations such as the US standard ANSI B30.5, The European EN 13000, Australian Standards (AS) and the Russian GOST standard.

Excellent off-road capacity and low cost global transport

The new LRT cranes from Liebherr are powerful and robust, have good off-road capability and are also manoeuvrable. Both crane models are powered by a CUMMINS diesel engine which meets all current emissions regulations. The engine develops 194 kW (264 bhp) and supplies a maximum torque of 990 Nm (730 lb-ft). A 6-speed powershift transmission from DANA and large 29.5 R25 tyres guarantee the required off-road capability for the cranes. Their maximum speed is 25 km/h (15 mph). All-wheel and crab steering ensure easy handling and high manoeuvrability in constricted conditions.

The LRT cranes measure 3.87 m (12'8") in height and 3.3 m (10'10") wide and are transported on public roads with a low loader. Their curb weight is less than 55 tonnes (121,000 lbs) with complete equipment including ballast or under 40 tonnes (88,000 lbs) without ballast and without equipment. That means that the new rough-terrain cranes from Liebherr can be transported worldwide at low cost. The LRT 1090-2.1 and the LRT 1100-2.1 can be readied for use quickly and are easy to assemble once they have reached the site. The outrigger pads which remain inside the width of the vehicle contribute to this since they do not have to be removed for transport.

High lifting capacities with long telescopic booms

The 100-tonne (110 USt) LRT 1100-2.1 has a 50 m (164 ft) telescopic boom with a "Telematik" telescoping system on which the various telescoping sections can be extended independently with a single cylinder and then pinned to the telescopic section above. The telescoping system on the new rough-terrain crane is particularly simple and user-friendly as excellent lifting capacities over the entire radius range can be achieved with just two telescoping modes, Strong or Long. 14 tonnes (30,800 lbs) of counterweights ensure high stability. The lifting capacity of the LRT 1100-2.1 is around 15% higher than that of the 90-tonne (100 USt) model which features 12 tonnes (26,500 lbs) of counterweights. The LRT 1090-2.1 features a 47 m (154 ft) telescopic boom. Its telescoping system consists of a two-stage hydraulic cylinder with a rope extension mechanism. Like the 100-tonne (110 USt) model the boom can be extended easily with two telescoping modes, Strong or Long. The extension mechanism on both crane models has been designed for high telescoping lifting capacities.

A second winch and the rooster sheave are included as standard on the basic machine for two-hook operation. As an option a 10.5 – 19 m (34.5 - 62 ft) double folding jib can be installed on the telescopic boom. It can be attached at an angle of 0°, 20° or 40°.

Terex to sell Demag mobile cranes business to Tadano

The Terex Corporation is announcing that it has agreed to sell its Demag Mobile Cranes business to Tadano Ltd. for an enterprise value of approximately $215 million.  The Demag Mobile Cranes business manufactures and sells all terrain cranes and large crawler cranes.  Included in the transaction are the manufacturing facilities in Zweibrucken, Germany and multiple sales and service locations.  The sale, which is subject to government regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions, is targeted to close in mid-2019.

Skyjack unveils new range of full size rough terrain scissor lifts

Skyjack has displayed their newest rough terrain scissor lift to The ARA Show in Anaheim. The SJ9253 RT is Skyjack's largest scissor lift to date with a working height of 59 feet (17.98 m) and is the first model in the industry leader's new full size rough terrain range. This new range replaces Skyjack's existing 88" and 92" models and consists of the SJ9233, SJ9243, SJ9253, and SJ9263 RT.

COMANSA to show new 21LC1050 at Bauma

Tower crane manufacturer COMANSA will be displaying its latest high capacity crane at Bauma. The 21LC1050 flat-top crane can load up to 50 tonnes (110,230 lb), has a maximum radius of 80 metres (262.4 ft), and was designed to provide great performance in large industrial or infrastructure projects as well as in construction with heavy precast or steel structures, including PPVC.

Liebherr-Werk Ehingen celebrates 50-year anniversary

Whether an air-conditioning system is to be lifted on a high-rise roof or whether it is a question of extremely heavy parts of bridges or wind turbines—wherever loads have to be lifted and positioned with great precision, mobile and crawler cranes from Liebherr-Werk Ehingen GmbH are used. The approximately 3,600 employees in the company produce around 1,800 machines every year. The diversity of variants is huge. The current product range includes forty different crane types which were developed by roughly 300 engineers. Every customer, every application, every country has its own requirements of the complex machines. The cranes manufactured in Ehingen can be roughly divided into two product lines. On the one hand, there are the wheeled mobile cranes, which include all-terrain mobile cranes, compact cranes, truck-mounted cranes and rough-terrain cranes. On the other hand are the crawler cranes with lattice jibs or telescopic booms. The most powerful crawler crane towers over the famous Ulm Minster church located a stone's throw away from Ehingen. It is 240 metres high and lifts loads up to 3,000 tonnes.  

Pettibone introduces 12,000-pound telehandler that can move loads by travelling horizontally

Marking its entry into the 12,000-pound capacity market, Pettibone has introduced the Traverse T1258X telehandler. The new Traverse model becomes part of the industry's only new telehandler product line with a traversing boom carriage that can move loads by travelling horizontally. By providing up to 70 inches of horizontal boom transfer, the Traverse allows operators to safely place loads at full lift height without needing to coordinate multiple boom functions.

CraneWorks expands inventory with addition of several Demag and Terex models

CraneWorks, Inc. is adding three new Demag AC 100-4L, one AC 300-6, four AC 160-5 and three AC 220-5 all terrain cranes and eight new Terex Crossover 8000 boom truck cranes to its inventory. This fleet addition will allow CraneWorks to meet the needs of its customers by helping them be more productive on the job. Manitowoc launches internal mast operator lift for Potain top slewing cranes

Manitowoc has officially launched an internal mast operator lift for Potain top slewing cranes. The Potain Cab-IN allows for fast, easy and safe travel to and from the crane cab, while retaining regular mast ladder access. It fits inside all K-mast systems of 1.6 m, 2 m and 2.45 m sections. The system is also compatible with all Potain bases/chassis, meaning it can be fitted into both existing and new crane models.
