Transportation route improvements get funding boost in Prince Edward Island

The governments of Canada and Prince Edward Island are investing in transportation infrastructure that will help create jobs and grow the middle class now while building a strong foundation for a sustainable economic future.

The Honourable Wayne Easter, Member of Parliament for Malpeque, on behalf of the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, and the Honourable Paula Biggar, Prince Edward Island Minister of Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy, has announced that several highway projects will move forward thanks to $8,879,749 in federal and provincial funding.

Phase 1 of the Cornwall Perimeter Highway project involves building two dual-lane roundabouts along Route 1 between the intersections of Maypoint and Poplar Island. Work will begin on this project as early as Monday, August 22, 2016.

Joint funding for three road projects will go towards widening and resurfacing Route 10 in Searletown and Route 6 between Kensington and Cavendish, as well as the realignment and resurfacing of Route 1A in Central Bedque.

Once complete, these projects will help improve traffic flow along strategic transportation corridors and boost economic growth by making it easier to get goods from farms to markets.

The total estimated cost of Phase 1 of the Cornwall Perimeter Highway project is $5,490,709. The Government of Canada will contribute up to $2,546,417, representing 50 percent of the total eligible project costs, while the Government of Prince Edward Island will provide $2,944,292.

For the other three road projects, the Government of Canada will provide $1,535,351 of the total $3.3 million cost of the three projects, while the government of Prince Edward Island will provide $1,853,689.
