Asphalt industry’s ‘Road Tour’ seminar rolls into Sudbury

The Ontario Hot Mix Producers Association (OHMPA), the voice of the province’s asphalt pavement industry, will bring its annual Road Tour seminar series to Sudbury on Tuesday, May 5.

OHMPA’s annual Road Tour is a four-city seminar series designed for asphalt producers, contractors and road-building stakeholders to get the latest industry information that will impact their work in the coming year. It also allows industry an opportunity to meet face-to-face with local Ministry of Transportation (MTO) representatives and municipal and consulting engineers. The unique event will bring together some of the best minds in the industry to engage in a conversation about how to continue producing the best quality roads possible.

“In light of recent media reports, the timing for this year’s Road Tour couldn’t be better,” said Doug Duke, OHMPA’s Executive Director. “As an industry association, we feel it’s important to work cooperatively and collaboratively with all stakeholders to ensure the highest quality roads for Ontarians. Every day, thousands of businesses and millions of people rely on our road infrastructure to get them where they need to go. Our Road Tour is about finding ways to ensure they can do that in as smooth and safe a manner as possible.” This year, attendees can look forward to a highly informative presentation by Al Palmer of Safety-Kleen who will discuss Vacuum Tower Asphalt Extenders (VTAEs), also known as Recycled Engine Oil Bottoms (REOB). A hot topic that has been in the news across Ontario recently, VTAEs are a complex and widely misunderstood product. Joining the Road Tour from Safety-Kleen’s headquarters in Texas, Mr. Palmer will explain exactly what VTAEs are, how they’re made, and what they do.

Elsewhere in the Road Tour program, John Fraser, Head of Program Planning at the MTO (Northeastern Region) will talk about the Ministry’s latest initiatives and present a look ahead to the 2015 paving season. Finally, OHMPA’s Technical Director, Sandy Brown will speak about tack coats. A vital part of the paving process, tack coat plays an integral role in achieving optimal long-term pavement performance and is often given little thought or is overlooked completely. Mr. Brown will explain the proper application of tack coat and the many benefits it brings.

Formed in 1974, the Ontario Hot Mix Producers Association is the authoritative voice of the province’s asphalt industry. For over forty years, OHMPA has been dedicated to excellence in asphalt paving. OHMPA’s Road Tour is a unique educational opportunity and all road-building stakeholders are welcome. The seminar will take place at the Towne Place Suites Marriott (1710 Kingsway, Sudbury, ON) on Tuesday, May 5th beginning at 7:30am with breakfast. Presentations begin at 8:30am and the program concludes at 12:30pm.
