Increases Cutting Depth by 25% and reduces turn radius by nearly 50%

With its 415 hp (309 kW) diesel engine and direct cutter drive, the new Terex RS446C Reclaimer/Stabilizer rivals the performance of 500-hp-class machines, while saving up to 30 percent on fuel costs. To increase operating flexibility, maximum cutting depth on the new reclaimer/stabilizer has been increased 25 percent to 20 in (508 mm). A two-stage engine drive and three-speed cutter transmission maximizes break-out forces for production rates reaching 155 fpm (47 mpm).  

A simplified frame design reduces the number of main frame parts by 52 percent and the number of raw material types by 81 percent for added reliability in the field. The RS446C features a new true rear axle design for increased performance. Kingpins replace spindles at the wheels to allow the tires to pivot closer to the frame, reducing the machine’s turning radius to 14 ft (4.3 m), nearly 50 percent tighter than previous models.

Located at the rear of the machine, a new service center significantly simplifies servicing of the RS446C. Featuring a fold-up ladder, the service center provides single-point access for fueling and hydraulic fluid and central lube system maintenance. Its new two-piece, bolt-together frame design offers unimpeded access to the engine. Conveniently located service access panels in the frame offer greater access to hydraulic pumps and the drive system. Enhanced access to the rear counterweight chamber allows sand to be used as ballast for quick changing.

The new Terex RS446C Reclaimer/Stabilizer incorporates four steerable hydraulic wheel drive motors at each corner of the machine. True four-wheel drive allows the machine to reliably operate in even the most challenging soil stabilization applications. Four-wheel steering with four steering modes – crab, coordinated, front only and rear only – optimize machine maneuverability and flexibility at the job site. In addition to the 155 fpm (47 mpm) operating speed, the two-speed transmission offers a 6.4 mph (10.3 kph) travel speed.

A new direct shift for the cutter transmission allows operators to more easily select one of the three cutter speeds, which range from 128 to 209 rpm. Contractors can now choose between available 600 gpm (2271 lpm) water only or water/emulsion additive systems for reclamation and stabilization applications.

The housing for the 96-in (2438 mm) wide cutter features a front door that opens twice as far as previous designs, which aids in product grading and sizing when operating in either the up-cut or down-cut directions. Heavy duty chains replace rigid turnbuckles to hold the position of the floating cutter housing at ground level for improved service life.

The machine’s full-width cabin boasts an upgraded pressurized and filtered HVAC system that focuses more vents on the operator for greater comfort. Cab glass design also helps to reduce temperatures inside the cab. A sliding operator station provides visibility to both sides of the machine.

The reclaimer/stabilizer has a transport weight of 55,000 lb (24,970 kg) and an operating weight of 60,000 lb (27,240 kg). The transport height with cab and ROPS is 11 ft 6 in (3.5 m) and width is 10 ft 4 in (3.2 m). The Terex RS446C is covered by a 12-month, unlimited hour warranty.

The new Terex RS446C is a byproduct of the company’s new engineering approach to product introductions, which significantly shortens the length of time from concept to launch. “Our new process begins with customer and dealer feedback,” says Nicole Carter, process engineering supervisor with Terex Roadbuilding. “It brings together a cross-functional team represented by design and manufacturing engineers, purchasing, customer support, sales and manufacturing to develop in the most efficient manner the best product to meet customer needs.”
