Hybrid technology available for Silverado and Sierra for 2009
For 2009, General Motors, through its two truck brands – Chevrolet and GMC – is offering a range of standard pickup styles and options, with an added attraction: hybrid technology.

The 2009 Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid full-size pickup achieves 40-percent greater city fuel economy and 25-percent improvement overall. Its GMC partner, the 2009 Sierra Hybrid, offers a 35-percent improvement in city fuel consumption and 25-percent improvement overall. Partnering General Motors’ two-Mode Hybrid system and a powerful 6.0L gas V-8, both trucks are designed for highly efficient performance. The hybrid system provides all-electric driving at low speeds, allowing fuel savings to be realized even when the truck is fully loaded or towing a trailer. These trucks can tow up to 6,100 pounds (2,767 kg), and both Hybrid vehicles will be offered in the Crew Cab body style, 2WD and 4WD models. Chevrolet Silverado standard heavy-duty models offer powerful designs and capabilities in two models: the 2500HD three-quarter-ton and the 3500HD one-ton variations. Three cab styles, three cargo box styles and five wheelbase lengths provide choices for users, and maximum towing capacity is 7,575 kg (16,700 pounds), when equipped with a fifth-wheel hitch.

Standard GMC Sierra heavy-duty trucks are also offered in a range of 2500HD and 3500HD models with three cab styles, three cargo box styles and five wheelbase lengths. The Sierra offers 8,392 kg (18,500-pound) gross combined vehicle weight rating for vehicles with a gas V-8 and a 5,897 kg (13,000-pound) conventional trailer weight rating enabled by a larger-capacity trailer hitch platform. Maximum towing capacity is 7,484 kg (16,500 pounds), when equipped with a fifth-wheel hitch.

The standard engine on both of these trucks is a 360-horsepower 6.0L gas V-8 with variable valve timing – which helps improve fuel economy – and powerful torque ratings. A Hydra-Matic 6L90 six-speed automatic transmission is paired with the 6.0L engine, and a clean and powerful Duramax 6.6L turbo-diesel engine is available with power ratings of 365 hp (272 kW) and 660 lb.-ft. of torque (895 Nm). Partnered with the Duramax engine is a diesel particulate filter system that helps provide a 90-percent reduction in particulate matter and a 50-percent reduction in NOx, when compared with models built prior to 2007. The Duramax engine is also enabled at the factory to run on B20 biodiesel fuel (fleet only) and the Allison 1000 six-speed automatic transmission is partnered with a Duramax 6.6L turbo-diesel engine.

Silverado and Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD are offered in regular, extended and crew cab configurations, which are complemented with standard 1.98 metre (six-foot six-inch) and 2.4 metre (eight-foot) cargo box lengths. 3500HD models are also available with the “Dually” dual rear wheel configuration on a long 2.4 metre (eight-foot) box.
