Tier 4 mandates driving demand for used non-Tier 4 equipment market

According to a recent survey of Independent Equipment Dealers Association (IEDA) members, the EPA’s Tier 4 mandates are driving up the demand of non-Tier 4, used construction equipment and predicts this trend will continue for the next several years. For many equipment categories, used equipment availability is outpacing demand, but for other categories, including excavators, backhoe loaders, wheel loaders, dump trucks dozers and compact equipment, IEDA members are seeing resale pricing increase by as much as 20 percent. Also, more than 50 percent of survey respondents noted that quality used equipment is getting harder to find.

Getting maximum performance, life and safety from OTR tires

Zipper-like injury resulting from running the tire underinflated.

Tires are critical components of off-the-road (OTR) vehicles and serve several functions that affect the productivity of your equipment and subsequently affect your bottom line. They support the load of the vehicle by retaining the inflation pressure, provide traction and braking, control the direction of travel, absorb road shocks to smooth the ride (on most OTR equipment, the tires are the only suspension for the equipment), and overcome road hazards.

Fighting fatigue: using technology to reduce risk of fatigue-related incidents on the jobsite

The Driver Safety System (DSS) monitors driver fatigue.

When a person is fatigued, the operation of heavy machinery or hand tools can become very dangerous. “A fatigue-related incident is more severe than a non-fatigue related incident,” said Todd Dawson, Project Manager for Cat Safety Services, at a recent Caterpillar trade press event. “People that fall asleep when they’re operating equipment or vehicles, they don’t do anything. They just run into whatever’s in front of them or run off the edge at whatever speed they’re going. A drunk driver, they’ll swerve. They just swerve too late or they put on the brakes. They just don’t put them on quick enough.”
